'Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro are some examples of Glucagon-like peptide 1 drugs (GLP1), which can be prescribed to treat Type 2 Diabetes or obesity and have exploded in popularity, according to the Houston-area doctors and pharmacists.' The first sentence in a very interesting article from a local publication, Community Impact, where the headline screams

) Most of the information people receive on this miracle weight loss drug comes true; nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation. oh and of course, weight loss. Nonetheless, the drug does lessen food cravings/hunger and slows food down as it moves through the gut (keeping you satiated/full longer). Sounds good huh!?

The manufacturers Novo Nordisk believes that this drug is the cure for obesity. Obesity is a real epidemic (with this I agree.) When you look at the

, the society that we live in has an obesity rate of over 30%, and the projections into 2040-2050, have obesity pushing up to 50% of the population. That is a real concern for us all.

What I am seeing from clients and friends who chose to use this path to weight loss (diabetic or not) is

           muscle loss

. With any diet where calories are restricted, what typically happens is the body feels starvation is happening and the body (your endocrine system) makes the decision to feed off of stored calories. Now ask yourself, what would you rather eat, fat or muscle. Our bodies are no different, and begin to use muscle as fuel. Low calorie diets also affect energy. My point here is if you or somebody you know is dieting or on a GLP1 and losing muscle, get on a program designed to detect muscle imbalances, joint dysfunction, and balance and keep your muscles strong. Muscle loss is a precedent for bone loss (Osteopenia/Osteoporosis).

Don't let your body (muscles or bones) grow weak!

Last month we talked about listening to and taking care of your heart. This month let’s focus on listening to your body.

A client of mine is doing just that. Today he asked to cancel a session due to knee pain from an old football injury. The injury is aggravating but not debilitating, and he has maintained awesome strength in his prime movers (leg muscles) over the years which keeps his body healthy. Nonetheless, the knee (especially when it is cold outside) does make matters worse and painful. But he listened to his body, and we talked about some ice/heat therapy to make matters better. Listen to your joints, if they are “screaming at you” … they might need a break from your routine. Or, perhaps more stretching for increased flexibility/elongation.

If you are standing up and see a penny or dollar bill lying on the ground and choose to pick that up, are you too stiff to just bend over and grab it? I have a friend who golfs, and recently told me how hard it is to get a “good read” on the golf ball. He said “in the past it was easy to get ground level with the ball to look at my lie (ball path to the target) … now it is more of a guess.”

Here is an example of ground level view; this takes a lot of muscle, balance, core strength, and practice. Can you move that well? Be careful if you try this!

The point my client made was simple. He had lost the strength to lay flat on the ground (or close to the ground) and then get back up to his feet easily. So he stopped doing that and now, he cannot do it at all. If you are not practicing your bodies need for movement today you are getting stiffer and that practice is going to get harder to do. USE your muscles!! Use your heart too!

Today I ask you to listen to your body and consider what you hear. When sitting at your desk does the middle section of your spine ache? If you are texting a lot … do you find it hard to pull your head back into neutral position comfortably? When you think about posture (did you just sit up and pull your shoulders back) do you find it almost uncomfortable to maintain? The list goes on of ways your body is telling you that something is just not right. Most often you are the person who notices these dysfunctions and only you can act on the issue. What is your body saying?

The cooler weather might have and adapting to the temperature might have your body telling you something. Listen, get ahead of any issues. Stop by today for a FIT functional movement screen and tune up your body!

I hope you all had a Happy Valentine’s Day (and Snow Days) last week! A heart full of love and chocolate … what a combination. Now that it is back to

           business as usual

, are you still listening to your heart? Listening to signals is so important when it comes to your health.

         REALLY LISTEN!

Are you listening to what your own heart is telling you? When you are laying in bed at night and it is quiet and dark and you are trying to get to sleep. What do you hear? Is your heart beating fast, ‘racing’, or is it ‘systematic and strong’? Do the heartbeats seem to be rhythmical and solid or haphazard and soft?

Haphazard heartbeats could be signs of circulatory distress called an arrhythmia. Arrhythmia is a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat, when the heart can beat too fast, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. When a heart beats too fast, the condition is called tachycardia. When a heart beats too slowly, the condition is called bradycardia. (To get a true measurement you need a trained ear to listen to your heart.)

As a general guideline, I like to place my ear on my upper arm and just listen to the blood flow from the brachial artery. If you are wondering how many beats the heart should make to sound healthy, you can count for time. (Maybe 30 seconds and multiply by 2.)

Below is the link to the American Heart Association Chart. The provided link has tools to determine resting as well as target heart rate ranges. We use a blood pressure cuff at home … definitely helpful to have! Your heart IS one of your most important organs and PLEASE do

           not

let that muscle become weak. LIFT weights for heart strength in addition to your walks, or choice of cardio. LOVE yourself by taking care of your heart!

          According to

Harvard Medical School – Health Publishing

, a study in March 2019 found that those who did at least an hour per week of weight training (using free weights and weight machines) had a 40% to 70% lower risk of heart attack or stroke compared with those who did not exercise. (They found similar results in people who did and did not do cardio exercise.) It didn’t matter if they worked out once, twice, or three times a week as long as they hit the hour mark. Other research has looked at how weight training specifically helps your heart. One possible reason is that it reduces a type of heart fat linked to cardiovascular disease.

If you are new to weight training, returning after a long layoff, or just hoping to up your game, as a certified trainer I can create a specialized weight training program for you and ensure you follow proper lifting technique and use all the tools available to get a total-body workout.

As you probably know, I have been in the fitness industry since the early 70’s. Yes, I am that old. As a child we were allowed to go into the Nautilus training room and exercise like anybody else and my Sensei (先生) jujitsu”teacher”, encouraged it. If my memory doesn’t fail me (and it usually doesn’t) I recall the overwhelming and obvious goal of everyone, even back then, was to lose fat and shape up.

Now here we are moving into 2021 and nothing has changed. I have even had several clients mention to me that since October they have actually gained several pounds. So what is happening? And, what are you going to do about it? There are over 50 years of medical theory, physical tools, no-fail diets, fitness guru’s, and know it all enthusiasts who in turn are guessing what to do. Truth is, we all know the solution and we all don’t like it … don’t we?

This is not the paragraph where I can sell you some amazing fix or plan to reverse the weight gain, muscle loss, bone decay, organ disease, posture repair, or laziness. Nope, that is all on you. Sorry. What I have acquired over the decades, experience. My FIT training sessions or lessons, are

           fun

ctional, comprehensive, and empowering. The movements are literally and physically designed and dedicated to develop proper neural pathways that build a balanced/functional framework for your body to move well. Pain free and strong. In other words, lose fat and shape up with

Above I posed the question, “So, what is happening? And what are you going to do about it?” There is no easy answer or quick solution, and no guarantees (in anything in life). What I can tell you … there is an answer and solution and that’s worth its weight in gold. So, let’s do this.

Starting JANUARY 2021 … a new chapter begins.

Kiss 2020 goodbye as last year hurts us all in many ways. Life was challenging last year physically, mentally, emotionally, and … a moment of silence for those who are no longer with. Amen! Positively, let’s look at 2021 as a year to empower ourselves by losing weight and shaping up. What I would like to offer you is this, the MEASURE OF 2021!

A MEASURE OF 2021 will be about you and is private, for your eyes-only. What matters is your health and one of the greatest measures of health and fitness is our physical body weight. Most of us know what the scale reads today and most of us honestly would like that number to be lower.

Words don’t weigh much unless they are measured.

Well, wishing will not change that number but hard work will. I am here, ready to help you measure up to your goals. Only you can make change happen, if you are wiling to make a change.

In 2021 accountability is that measure of success. Purchase a new package of FIT Personal Training sessions and then let’s allocate a few minutes to get the digits; anthropometric measurements, scale weight, and body composition and, set a new fitness goal! And make a plan! We can honestly make 2021 all about you!

Spoiler alert … we need to talk about your diet.
